Baird’s Equity Asset Management business is seeing strong growth with assets under management climbing to nearly $6B from $1B in the past five years. Continued growth is expected given well-positioned products, an increased distribution platform, competitive fees and the strength of Baird. The business offers six institutional products – Mid Cap Growth, Small/Mid Growth, Small Cap Value, Small/Mid Value, International and Global. Each of Baird Equity AM offerings has available capacity and five of six have a three year or greater duration track record. We expect to develop additional products based upon client needs.

We are seeking a high-performing and experienced individual to join our team and be responsible for developing our northeast intermediary territory including calling on Registered Investment Advisors, bank trusts and multi-family offices. The successful individual will have strong capital markets knowledge with the ability to discuss stocks and sectors and get to know each of our various teams/products in sufficient depth in order to develop consultative relationships with prospects and clients. Our model is to develop 200 client relationships with 30-40 advocate level relationships. The Intermediary Specialist understands the importance of superior client service through trusted relationships and is ready to build a career within Baird Equity Asset Management. This position is based in our downtown Milwaukee office and will require travel as needed.

As an Intermediary Specialist, you will:
  • Develop institutional level relationships with RIAs, bank trusts, and multi-family offices in our northeast territory to sell all Baird’s Equity Funds and, therefore, will represent multiple equity teams. The northeast territory includes New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. We are looking for someone with strong people and relationship building skills as well as a solid consultative capability.
  • Creating an annual business plan to be reviewed 2-4 times per year by the Director of Baird Equity Asset Management to detail a strategy for achieving asset gathering responsibilities, including numbers and types of meetings, key targets, follow-up and touch point plans and annual service levels.
  • The position will require 180+ quality meetings annually. Targeting 15 meetings per month will require traveling at least three weeks per month on average. Leveraging the entire territory will be a must.
  • Document calling efforts, meetings and general client activity in the Salesforce.com CRM system. Also provide feedback on efforts to management and investment teams.
  • Work closely with investment personnel on multiple teams to learn all products in depth and to understand their various perspectives. Having the ability to develop relationships with members of the investment team is a must.
  • Initial prospect meetings will require providing a detailed overview of Baird Equity Asset Management and individual products. Subsequent meetings will be gained by developing creative solutions for their benefit. These may include comments on the current state of the capital markets and how our products can play a helpful role or capital market insights that help them look smart to their clients.
  • A willingness and ability to get to know the associated platforms, such as Schwab and Fidelity, to learn about how they interface with key clients and how they can be leveraged to generate relationships. These platforms serve as the basis for the “pipes and straws” in distribution and require the ability to generate strong relationships.
  • Willingness and ability to work with clients, key intermediaries and legal on contract and policy details.
  • Understands an entrepreneurial environment, including the necessary sense of urgency to move the business forward.

What we look for:
  • Strong people skills to understand people needs and how to communicate with people – must be likable and build long-term relationships. Communication skills will include both oral and written. A superior level of professionalism is mandatory.
  • The ability to take complex capital markets and product information and help prospects and clients leverage this information. The ability to think creatively to present differentiated solutions in a very competitive environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree – 3-5 years of external sales experience in asset management; existing relationships in the northeast is preferred. CFA (or wiliness to obtain) is strongly preferred.
  • Strong capital markets knowledge and experience as well as the demonstrated ability to discuss industry sectors and stocks with a high level of detail and insight. Our sales personnel are expected to keep up with the economic and business news, the markets, regularly interface with strategy PMs and analysts and perform attribution analysis to provide clients with unique and value-added insight.
  • Ability and willingness to dive deep into platform structures, including leaning about a variety of programs, developing relationships with key personnel, negotiating key terms for placement on fund platforms. A deep understanding of platform contracts and working through details on an ongoing basis is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team player as our sales personnel work together to build key relationships.
  • SIE, Series 7 & 66 licensed or ability to obtain in 3 months.
  • Strong PC skills with knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Salesforce CRM and Celera are a plus.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
